I will refrain myself from using the word 'crash' in this post, but I think you know where I'm going with this. 'Speed Racer' didn't manage to pick up speed. 'Speed Racer' wasn't fast enough. 'Speed Racer' passed by 'Iron Man.'
In short, 'Speed Racer' just didn't meet Warner Bros' expectations, only making $20.2 million this weekend. That's only a couple of visitors more than what 'What Happens in Vegas' did, with $20 million. But the word is, Warner Bros. even upped this low number to get in second instead of third. That would of course have made the failure even more embarrassing, because 'What Happens in Vegas' only cost $35 million and 'Speed Racer' budget estimates range from $100 to $185 million.

'Iron Man' made another $50.5 million this weekend, with the domestic total topping $175 million. This slightly beats the weekend expectations for the movie and shows how the comic hero can probably hold up well in the next weekend behind the new 'Chronicles of Narnia' movie.
'Speed Racer' is not expected to bring in nearly enough to cover its budget and expenses. Not only did the budget get out of proportion, the racing movie also has a marketing budget of over $100 million, plus another $100 million in promotional deals. They just didn't want to believe what a failure they produced. It's the saddest Hollywood story this year since Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.
These are the totals for the weekend:
1. Iron Man: $50.5 million 2. Speed Racer: $20.2 million 3. What Happens in Vegas: $20 million 4. Made of Honor: $7.6 million 5. Baby Mama: $5.8 million 6. Forgetting Sarah Marshall: $3.8 million 7. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay: $3.2 million 8. The Forbidden Kingdom: $1.9 million 9. Nim's Island: $1.3 million 10. Redbelt: $1.1 million
