New photos: 'Public Enemies'

These shots were taken at the set of Johnny Depp’s new film ‘Public Enemies.’ The $80 million movie is shooting in Chicago with Michael Mann, also creator of ‘Miami Vice,’ ‘Collateral’ and ‘Ali,’ directing.

The crime drama is set during The Great Depression and revolves around FBI agent Melvin Purvis in his attempt to stop criminal John Dillinger. The story is based on the book by Bryan Burrough, with Johnny Depp playing John Dillinger. He is co-starring with Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis. Shooting will take place until the end of June and ‘Public Enemies’ will hit theaters after one year of post-production.

Also notice how the bakery is actually a book store. Don’t let the cinema fool you!

Directors: Steven Spielberg's box office ritual

Show me the 311 million dollars

It was Monday morning. Steven Spielberg just made himself a cup a coffee when the phone started to ring. He picked up and said nothing. The man on the other side was silent too, but then asked, “Steven…?” “Yes,” Spielberg answered. “311 million,” the voice said. I imagine Spielberg dancing around in his bathrobe after these words, but that’s just speculation on my part.

This is the actual ritual Steven Spielberg has during his opening weekends. “What I do on opening weekend is my ritual is a total blackout, like a sequestered jury. No radio, no telephone, no internet, no newspapers. I don’t want to hear anything until Monday morning. I just want to hear one number, which is the Monday morning number,” Spielberg said.

I wonder what he does in the meantime. You’ll need some discipline to go a whole Memorial Day weekend without telephone, internet or radio. I can imagine some teenage girls rather killing themselves than spending one weekend without it. But I guess Spielberg has enough toys to keep him happy.

Weinstein picks up other 'Valkyrie'

Weinstein Tom Cruise Valkyrie

Are we still expecting Tom Cruise’s ‘Valkyrie’ next winter? Because during all United Artists’ startup problems, I might have missed another delay. In any case, Weinstein Co. just bought the rights to a similar German movie called ‘Operation Valkyrie,’ also about the failed assassination of Adolf Hitler.

There’s no question he picked up the rights because of the $100 million ‘Valkyrie,’ directed by Bryan ‘X-Men’ Singer. Since ‘Operation Valkyrie’ came out in 2004 and he could’ve picked up the rights for 4 years. In the German movie Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is played by Sebastian Koch, the same role Tom Cruise has in ‘Valkyrie.’ A funny fact is, Carice van Houten stars in ‘Valkyrie’ with Cruise, while she starred with Koch in last year’s WWII drama ‘Black Book.’ And to top it all off, Koch is also her lover in real life. The coincidence of cinema.

New photos: 'The Dark Knight'

Omelete scored two exclusive ‘The Dark Knight’ banners. It shows the great distinctive style of the $150 million Batman movie. This will likely be the next ‘Iron Man’ in terms of box office. It may even fly past the Marvel hero, since sequels tend to do a little better in the theaters. And if one movie got positive buzz on the internet these days, it’s ‘The Dark Knight.’

Christian Bale and Heath Ledger will hit the theaters July 18.
