Worldwide box office numbers: Monsters, Watchmen, Gran Torino, Knowing, more

Watch the video: Worldwide Box Office Transcript:

The weekend ended as expected. A good start for Monsters vs. Aliens, but not ground breaking. Knowing ended with $14.7 million. A good second week. The Haunting in Connecticut did more than it probably deserved, $23 million. And DreamWorks Monsters vs. Aliens topped with $58.2 million.

That’s the third best opening in March. So it’s pretty good, but it needs to make a lot more to make some profit. The big story however, was 3-D. $33 million of the $58 million was made at 3-D screens. The biggest 3-D launch ever. Overseas, the weekend was a lot slower. At the third place, Mall Cop Paul Blart made $8 million. Gran Torino did $8.4. And Knowing topped with a shallow $9.8 million.

Behind Paul Blart was Marley and Me with $7.9 million. Now at a total of $223 million worldwide. Knowing stands at a total of $60 million worldwide after two weeks. And Gran Torino has made $228 million. This must be a surprise for Clint Eastwood. Since Changeling cost twice as much and made half of that at the box office last year.

In other news, Watchmen made $7.2 million worldwide for a total of $168 million. This means it’ll likely end under $200 million. Which means, like a $150 million plus loss for Warner? Ouch.

Next week we’ll have Fast and Furious and the low budget Adventureland.

Is it finally time for Gary Oldman to win an Oscar? Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
