The automaton plays a huge part in Hugo. Long before there was electricity, people build these mechanical robots. They worked using clockwork mechanisms and resembled humans or animals. The rich would show them off at parties. Georges Méliès, played by Ben Kingsley, at one time had big collection of these automata.
